UIL Tennis – Fall and Spring Seasons

At the high school level, UIL Tennis is a Fall and Spring sport.  In the Fall, all individual matches are combined for a total result against an opponent.  The Spring is counted individually, so there is no win/loss school result.

Fall Team Tennis

A typical dual vs an opponent consists of 19 matches. Those matches are: 3 boys doubles, 3 girls doubles, 6 boys singles, 6 girls singles and 1 mixed doubles match.  Who plays who?  Line 1 vs the opponents line 1, 2 vs 2, and so on.  A player may play both doubles and singles.  Every match is equally important down to Line 6.  Doubles play will lead off the dual and the first team to win 10 matches is the winner.  At that point, any unfinished matches end with no result.  At times, depending on weather and or lights, unfinished matches may be played out to the end for match experience for the players.

In district play, we play each district opponent once.  This decides seeding for the District Tournament.  The 1st and 2nd place teams from the season and District Tournament advance to the Regional Tournament.  The winners of the 4 Regional Tournaments in the state advance to the State Tournament for the Team Tennis Championship.

Spring Individual Tennis

Players are placed in a singles or doubles discipline by the coaches.  A dual vs an opponent will consist of 2 boys singles, 2 girls singles, 2 boys doubles, 2 girls doubles and 2 mixed doubles matches.  The matches are played out for experience and results are kept during the season for district seeding purposes.  The season ending District Tournament is played in a typical bracket style tournament.  There is a boys singles bracket, a girls singles bracket, and so on.  2 entries from each school play in the brackets with the 1st and 2nd place winners advancing to the Regional Tournament.  The 1st and 2nd place winners from the Regional Tournament advance to the State Tennis Championship.
